A clear overview of who can generally donate blood in India — age, weight, health, and haemoglobin requirements — and why the final decision always happens at the screening table, not on a website.

Thinking about donating blood but not sure if you qualify? You're not alone — eligibility questions are one of the biggest reasons people hesitate before their first donation.

The good news: most healthy adults are eligible to donate. The general requirements are straightforward, and even if you're not eligible today, that's often temporary rather than permanent.

This guide walks through the general eligibility criteria used across Indian blood banks, so you know roughly where you stand before you show up.

Important: This article describes general eligibility guidance, not a personal medical assessment. Every donor is screened individually — including a private health questionnaire, a quick physical check, and a haemoglobin test — at the time of donation. Only that screening can confirm whether you're eligible to donate on a given day.

Quick Overview

Here's the general snapshot most Indian blood banks work from:

Criterion	General Requirement
Age	18–65 years
Weight	45 kg or more
Haemoglobin	12.5 g/dL or more
General health	Feeling well, no active fever or infection
Donation interval	Generally 3 months between whole blood donations

These figures follow the general standards referenced by India's blood transfusion guidance (see Sources below). Individual blood banks may apply their own screening protocols within these bounds, so treat this as a starting point — not a guarantee.

Age Requirements

Most donors need to be between 18 and 65 years old. Some blood banks set the upper limit slightly differently, and a first-time donor over a certain age may need additional screening — this varies by centre, so it's worth checking directly if you're near either end of the range.

Weight Requirements

A minimum weight of around 45 kg is the general threshold used across Indian blood banks. This exists because the volume of blood collected during a standard donation (roughly 350 ml) is calculated to be safely tolerated relative to total body blood volume — donors below the weight threshold aren't excluded arbitrarily, it's a safety margin.

General Health

On the day of donation, you're generally expected to:

Feel well overall — no fever, cold, flu, or active infection
Not be currently on antibiotics for an infection
Have had a reasonable night's sleep and a meal within a few hours of donating
Not be significantly dehydrated

If you're feeling under the weather, it's better to reschedule than to push through — this protects both you and the person who eventually receives your donation.

Haemoglobin Levels

Before you donate, a quick finger-prick test checks your haemoglobin level, generally required to be at or above 12.5 g/dL. This is checked every single time you donate, not just the first time, since haemoglobin levels can genuinely change between visits.

If your haemoglobin is below the threshold on a given day, you're simply deferred until it recovers — this is common, temporary, and not something to be discouraged by. Iron-rich foods and adequate rest are typically enough to bring levels back up over time.

How Often Can You Donate?

Whole blood donation generally requires a gap of around 3 months between donations, giving your body time to fully replenish red blood cells. See How Often Can You Donate Blood? for the full breakdown, including how this differs for other donation types like platelets.

Temporary vs. Permanent Deferral

Not being eligible today doesn't mean not being eligible ever. Most deferrals are temporary — recent travel to certain regions, a recent tattoo or piercing, pregnancy, or a recent minor illness, for example, all typically resolve after a waiting period.

A smaller number of conditions lead to permanent deferral, generally related to specific medical or infectious-disease history. See Who Should Not Donate Blood? for a fuller picture of both temporary and permanent situations.

Medications and Existing Conditions

Being on medication doesn't automatically rule you out — many common medications (for mild conditions like controlled blood pressure or thyroid conditions, for instance) don't affect eligibility at all. Others require a waiting period after the last dose.

Rather than trying to self-assess this from a list online, mention every medication and condition honestly during the screening questionnaire — the staff conducting it are trained specifically to make this call correctly.

What Happens at Screening?

Every donor goes through the same basic process before donating:

A confidential health history questionnaire
A brief check of pulse, blood pressure, and temperature
A haemoglobin check via a small finger-prick sample
A private conversation with medical staff if anything needs clarifying

This entire process usually takes a few minutes and is designed to protect both you and the recipient — not to create hurdles.

Do You Need to Know Your Blood Group?

No — you don't need to know your blood group before registering to donate. It's determined through testing as part of the donation process itself. If you're curious about what the different blood groups mean and how they relate to compatibility, see Understanding Blood Groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum age to donate blood in India?

Generally 18 years, with an upper limit typically around 65 — individual blood banks may apply slightly different bounds.

What is the minimum weight requirement?

Around 45 kg is the general threshold used across Indian blood banks.

Do I need a minimum haemoglobin level?

Yes — generally 12.5 g/dL or above, checked at every single donation via a quick finger-prick test.

Can I donate if I'm on medication?

Often yes. Many common medications don't affect eligibility, though some require a waiting period. Disclose everything honestly during screening rather than self-assessing.

How often can I donate blood?

Whole blood donation generally requires about a 3-month gap between donations. See our dedicated guide for the full breakdown.

Do I need to know my blood group before donating?

No — it's determined through testing as part of the donation process.

What if I'm deferred on a particular day?

Most deferrals are temporary — you can typically donate again once the underlying reason (low haemoglobin, recent illness, recent travel, etc.) has resolved.

Is the screening process private?

Yes. The health questionnaire and any follow-up conversation with medical staff are confidential.

Medical & Safety Disclaimer

This article is provided by Lifia for general educational purposes and reflects commonly cited eligibility guidance for blood donation in India. It is not medical advice and does not replace the screening conducted by a blood bank or blood donation camp. Only that in-person screening — including your health history, a physical check, and a haemoglobin test — can determine whether you're eligible to donate on a given day.

If you have a specific medical condition or are unsure about your eligibility, the safest step is to ask directly at your nearest blood bank or donation camp before you attend.
